5 Common Myths About Botox and Dermal Fillers, Busted
Botox and dermal fillers are among the most requested treatments in aesthetic medicine — and also among the most misunderstood. Here are five myths worth retiring.
Myth 1: Botox creates a frozen look
A frozen appearance is almost always a dosing and placement issue, not an inherent property of the treatment. Administered thoughtfully, Botox softens the muscle activity that causes expression lines while preserving natural movement.
Myth 2: Dermal fillers only address wrinkles
Fillers are used well beyond wrinkle-softening — restoring volume in the cheeks, enhancing lip shape, refining jawline definition, and correcting asymmetry are all common goals.
Myth 3: These treatments are only for older patients
A growing number of patients in their twenties and thirties use Botox and fillers preventively, aiming to slow the formation of lines caused by repeated expression rather than to reverse existing ones.
Myth 4: Botox and fillers are unsafe
When administered by a qualified medical professional following established safety protocols, these are well-studied, widely used treatments with a strong safety record. The provider — and the standards they hold themselves to — matter more than the product itself.
Myth 5: Results are permanent and instant
Botox typically lasts three to four months; dermal fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years depending on the formulation and area treated. Maintenance visits are a normal, expected part of the process — not a sign something went wrong.
